This kind of workflow is also great for designing characters in a game. Such approaches proved to be very helpful in the professional area. Sometimes it’s about testing the limits of a tool. Sometimes it’s about making an idea in my head come true. I also treat every attempt very differently. ![]() I treat my whole body of work as a sketchbook. What would you say is unique about your approach to a project? One can snap photos of work in progress and consider what yet to be perfected. It’s like owning a neat little photo atelier. It’s great for making photorealistic renders. When used wih ZBrush, it makes assessing the effects of one’s work with a single click possible. Real-time renderers are a tool craved by every artist in my branch. I kept looking for a renderer which would allow me to preview every part of the process. When I started to design characters, my interest in rendering ignited. ![]() I found being an important part of the whole creative process – from a concept drawing to a moving, lifelike character in a game – very interesting. The most important phase of my career started when I became a Character Artist for a game development company. What are some highlights throughout your career? It was called Twelve Dreams and consisted of female silhouettes in surreal surroundings. My graduation work was a mix of photography and 3D rendering. I had been studying photography at the time, focused on finding a renderer which would allow me to create a virtual photo atelier. The next breakthrough came when I saw the Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within. From then on, I knew creating 3D graphics was what I wanted to do for a living. This was around the time when Pixar produced their first short movies Angry Birds and Geri’s Game, just after Steve Jobs had bought Pixar in 1986. I could sense the potential computers had for creating visuals How full of creative possibilities. I was bored stiff by traditional engraving courses, so I would often skip those and spend hours in the computer lab. In those days, computers weren’t exactly an ubiquitous item here in Poland–Many of my fellow students kept their distance from it all. The possibilities regarding layering were breathtakingly endless. I remember my first attempts at Photoshop. It became a tool for me, just as a brush or a pencil. Using computers daily, introduced technology to my work. I believe the first spark was struck when I attended the Polish Academy of Arts in Cracow. The integration allows for any number of SubTools and complete support of MatCaps while retaining all texturing and PolyPainting. What first sparked your interest in digital concept art? As a separate program, ZBrush users can apply materials and lighting while continuing to work within ZBrush to refine their idea, then send updates over to KeyShot to see their updates immediately. ‘KeyShot for ZBrush’ is activated from inside ZBrush when an artist is ready to set lighting and materials for their creation with all SubTools sent directly to KeyShot. Each SubTool can have a different material shader–light, glass, metal, etc.–It’s very useful for the designers, offering us the possibility to obtain final presentations faster.” “For me the KeyShot Bridge is the cool feature of the year. ![]() “The first time I saw KeyShot, I immediately realized how I could show my art, my models, my products more effectively than other render engines,” says Cki Vang, CG Artist. “In an industry where concepts are needed quickly and the artist’s workflow needs to be faster, ‘KeyShot for ZBrush’ provides the modeling and rendering speed that those in media and entertainment require.” “We are amazed at the capabilities ZBrush brings to the 3D Artist,” says Henrik Wann Jensen, Co-founder and Chief Scientist of Luxion. It’s this partnership with Luxion and the new modeling capability in ZBrush 4R7 which allow artists to explore beyond the limits of imagination.” “The feedback from artists has been instrumental in the development effort, for a process that is faster than ever before. “The speed and realism KeyShot offers, compliments the ZBrush artist’s workflow perfectly,” says Jaime Labelle, COO at Pixologic. Pixologic takes this integration even further with ‘KeyShot for ZBrush’, a standalone rendering solution with direct integration inside ZBrush through the ZBrush to KeyShot Bridge that allows users to visualize their concepts, creating light studies in KeyShot as they continue to sculpt, texture and paint their model in ZBrush. With an integrated workflow between ZBrush and KeyShot introduced in the past, 3D artists realized the two as an indispensable combo for creating concepts quickly. Pixologic’s ZBrush is known throughout the 3D industry as the key software for generating digital sculptures fast. ![]()
